Did you know that wet wipes being flushed down toilets cause more than a third of all drain and sewer blockages in the UK?
These blockages can cost families hundreds of pounds to clear and the worst blockages can cause toilets, sinks and baths to overflow inside homes, causing extensive damage.
If the sewer floods externally it can pollute watercourses and the local environment.
We at Southern Water are launching a campaign to encourage families to put wet wipes in the bin instead of the loo.
We would like to link up with the NCT to help promote the campaign about popping wet wipes in the bin and not the loo to new parents as we have discovered that many people have no idea about the problem.
Even wipes described as 'flushable' often aren't and biodegradable ones often don't spend long enough in the sewer to start to decompose.
With NCT working so widely across the country, we'd love to link up with you to help communicate this message which will help protect families' homes and help keep our sewers running freely.

Yours sincerely,

Perhaps now is a good time to raise awareness of reusable wipes! Re-useable
wipes can be bought ready- made or you can make your own from a length of fleece or
old towels, cut up into squares and dampened and put in a plastic bag for use when out and about.
There are many brands of reusable wipes, such as 'Close Parent' and 'Cheeky Wipes'. This website also has a lot of choice:

Cotton wool and warm water can also be used - cheaper and kinder to skin than wipes!
